Vegemite

The latest news flash on the Tele today during the V8 Super Cars Race,  stated that Vegemite had been banned in the United States

THE US appears to have banned Vegemite,
even to the point of searching Aussies for jars of the spread as they enter the country.

Vegemite cannot legally be imported into the States anymore because it contains Folate.

What the heck is Folate?

Folate is a vitamin B source that according to the FDA can only be added to breads and cereals in the US.

Recently a former Geelong man, Daniel Fogarty, who now lives in Calgary, said he was stunned when searched for Vegemite while crossing the US border on a trip to Montana recently.

"The border guard searched our car and asked us if we were carrying any Vegemite," Mr Fogarty said.   "I was flabbergasted."

"The official said Vegemite wasn't permitted in the US."

Ok, here are some facts for you.

As stated on http://dietary-supplements.info.nih.gov/factsheets/folate.asp

Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin that occurs naturally in food. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate that is found in supplements and added to fortified foods.

  • Folate helps produce and maintain new cells.
  • Especially important during periods of rapid cell division and growth such as infancy and pregnancy.
  • Folate is needed to make DNA and RNA, the building blocks of cells.
  • Folate also helps prevent changes to DNA that may lead to cancer.
  • Both adults and children need folate to make normal red blood cells and prevent anemia.
  • Folate is also essential for the metabolism of homocysteine, and helps maintain normal levels of this amino acid.
Sounds like someone has made a mistake to me.

By the way...     I like Vegemite, and that seems to surprise a lot of people cause normaly Americans can't stand it.

as a matter of fact... I think I'll have myself a Vegimite Sanger right now!

Hooroo!!

Don't shoot me - vegemite is ewwwwwy. I don't agree with it being banned because it contains Folate - but it should definitely be banned for tasting bad. :)
